Project Overview

In 2019, Global Brigades completed a new water system in the community of El Hatillo in collaboration with an NGO called Rotary Club. The system provides water to 134 beneficiaries.

El Hatillo, Nicaragua

Community members of El Hatillo are connected to a water-fed gravity system that comes from a natural spring that is located in a neighboring community, Rincon Largo. The water system was built 20 years ago by both communities. However, Nicaragua had recently witnessed years of drought, which had affected the system that was shared between these communities.

Additionally, families of Rincon Largo were using water from the system to supply their cattle and agricultural activities. All this had caused the lack of water to families in El Hatillo. The water did not flow to the distribution network in El Hatillo, meaning that the water was only mostly reaching the community of Rincon Largo. In the summertime, the community of El Hatillo only got water once per week, which is not enough water to supply for basic activities.

Water System Solution

The water project will consist of drilling a well, installing a submersible pump (1.5 HP) that works with 240 volts of electricity, and laying a PVC pipe system (with a diameter of 2.5 inches) that will conduct the water over a length of 230 meters. This will then connect first to the water storage tank, which had a capacity of 10m3.

This water project will provide water to a total of 38 families, the Health Center, the Primary School and the Catholic Church in El Hatillo. The first phase of the project comprised of the excavation of 6,050 meters of trench and the installation of 6,050 meters of PVC pipes of various sizes (2 in., 1 1⁄2 in., 1 in., 1 1⁄4 in.,3⁄4 in., and 1⁄2 in. in diameter). The total cost of the project will be provided from Global Brigades, community members of El Hatillo, AVODEC, and the Rotary Club
