Project Overview

Global Brigades partnered with Water for People and the municipal government to complete a water system for over 700 people in La Naranja in 2016.

La Naranja, Nicaragua

Before Global Brigades’ arrival in La Naranja, most of the community resorted to looking for water in springs in the mountains surrounding the community, having to walk, carrying containers of water back to their homes. The springs wwre unprotected making the water unsafe to drink without treatment, and sometimes were located up to 1 kilometer away from the homes in the community, consuming a significant amount of time and energy each day. About 20 families had access to a 25 year old water system, but this only supplied them with untreated water for a few hours per day.

Water System Solution

Utilizing existing mountatin sources, Global Brigades, with almost 300 volunteers, was able to partner with Water for People and the local municipal government to build new gravity based water system for the entire community of La Naraja in 2016. The system consists of a catchment and intake structures, pipelines from multiple sources, 2 storage tanks, a distribution network, household connections and a Water Council to operate, maintain and administrate the system.
